Developer Digital Extremes’ Warframe is the latest game to be confirmed for PS5 and Xbox Series X, according to an announcement from the parent company Leyou.
Initially released in 2013, Warframe continues to grow and enjoy great success and is the most popular game worldwide. It’s been in the top charts of Steam consistently, and Leyou reports that it is one of the highest-grossing free-to-play games on PS4 and Xbox One.
Leyou confirms during an earnings report, where it stated that Digital Extremes is “preparing to expand Warframe to more platforms, such as the next-generation consoles and other devices.”
Leyou confirmed that the game had experienced a 12.2% drop in revenue, which the company attributed to other games diverting attention away from Warframe, the reason is the drop in current-generation consoles as the next generation of consoles near closer to release. The issues that impact Warframe’s revenues are “fleeting,” Leyou said, adding that the company expects Warframe to remain popular going forward.
“With the next-generation consoles to be released by the end of 2020, sales of current models have been declining, which contributed to a reduced number of new console players.”
The other reason for a slump in profits is the size and scale of development work on Warframe’s Empyrean milestone content update. Leyou said “update cadence” was momentarily affected as less new game content was released while Digital Extremes focused on the Empyrean update.
Digital Extremes stated in the report that they are planning to launch Warframe on the PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X, as well as “other devices,” which should help the franchise expand further.
Leyou believes Warframe will overwhelm these difficulties with the release of next-generation consoles like PS5 and Xbox Series X.
“Looking ahead to 2020, content updates for Warframe in the story quest The New War and another open-world are planned to be launched in 2020. Besides, we will have further content updates of Empyrean, and optimize the beginner guidance process and beginner’s level. 2020 will be another prospering year for Warframe, and more plans will be announced to players in TennoCon in July 2020,” Leyou said.
A release date hasn’t been announced for Warframe to arrive on next-gen consoles. However, both consoles should be backward compatible with the current-gen version at launch.
