Production is now on their way for Concrete Cowboys, with Idris Elba casting Stranger Things‘ Caleb McLaughlin. The film is also casting Jharrel Jerome, who is currently Emmy nominated for Ava DuVernay’s When They See Us
The film is based on the real-life Fletcher Street Stables- a black urban horse riding skill community which has remained in Philadelphia for more than 100 years giving a safe shelter for the neighbourhood. Pic is also taken from the novel Ghetto Cowboy by Greg Neri. Concrete Cowboys is a story of a 15-year-old Cole (McLaughlin) who lives with his divorced father Harp (Elba) in North Philadelphia, he found the city’s lively urban cowboy crew which developers despite the neighbouring hardship, violence, and infringement of gentrification.
The film is directed by Ricky Staub and written by himself with Dan Walser. This series is Ricky’s feature directing debut after heading The Cage, a short which tells the tale of living in the roadway of Philadelphia.
Concrete cowboys is produced by Tucker Tooley Entertainment with Lee Daniels Entertainment and Elba’s Green Door Pictures. Elba is producing the drama with Daniels, Walser, Tooley, Waxylu Films’ Jeff Waxman, Jennifer Madelof and Jennifer Madoff. The executive producers of the series are Greg Renker, Sam Mercer, Jason Barhydt, Tegan Jones, Neri and Staci Hagenbaugh.
Concrete cowboys is a huge chance for McLaughlin, who was seen as Lucas Sinclair in the Netflix series Stranger Things and shared collection SAG Award in 2017. He started his career on the theatre stage as Young Simba in the musical The Lion King.
