Normal People is an adaptation of Sally Rooney’s award-winning novel of the same name. It is 12 part drama series. The first six episodes is directed by Oscar-nominated Room director Lenny Abrahamson and the final six by Hettie Macdonald.
The filming of Normal People started on May 30, 2019 with its first phase ending on July 30. Scenes are mainly shot in Sligo, Dublin, Italy and Sweden.
The series follows two students, Marianne and Connell, studying at a secondary school in County Sligo on Ireland’s Atlantic coast. They are two completely opposite individuals when it comes to speaking about the time spent at school. Connell is a popular football player who also excels academically.
Whereas Marianne is not so popular but topper of the class. She is a loner who would usually challenge her teachers. But as they say opposites attract, they fall for each other. Connell was not ready to admit to his friends that he was seeing this unpopular girl. So the series portrays their on and off relationship. Their story although continues as both of them joins the same undergraduate college in Dublin.
The film features real life students from Trinity College, Dublin. But one might wonder the closeness of the series’ story with the novel. In all, the show nearly sticks to the novel’s concept displaying the two protagonist’s dealing with heartbreak, grief and growing up. But when anything is being brought to the screens, there are chances of certain changes.
Speaking about the cast, Daisy Edgar- Jones plays Marianne Sheridon and Paul Mescal plays Connell Waldron. Other casts include Sarah Greene, Aislín McGuckin, Frank Blake Eliot Salt, Desmond Eastwood and Aoife Hinds.
Normal people is now available on Hulu and BBC Player, where the subscribers can watch it online and can download the episodes as well. Hulu provides 30 days free trial at first after which one needs to subscribe the basic or premium plan.
