How does £1 million sound to you? A lot right! But I am sure all of our readers would not resort to something as low as cheating. Well, Be prepared to get surprised. The Quiz which is based on an episode of the game show. Presented by Chris Tarrant. Where the British Army Major Charles Ingram scooped the top prize of £1 million.
However, this slowly turned into another story altogether. Charles and his wife Diana and was is seen as a supposed accomplice, Tecwen Whittok. Were arrested for suspicion of cheating.
How did they cheat?
What they thought was a clever thought out plan. Did not exactly go their way. They used well-timed coughs from the audience. Which hinted the player in the seat “Charles” to the right answer.
What is a Quiz about?
The quiz is based on a set of questions. These questions are in relation to a person general knowledge. If you answer the quiz rightly. After every question, you become eligible for a certain amount of cash prize.
Quiz and Charles’s Scandal
Charles is shown in over two episodes on the quiz show. However, it was not because of this scandal. it was simply because the show ran out of time and had to continue the second day.
How did they catch the Scandal?
When they finished the recording on the first day. It did not seem like Charles would make very far. The reason was simply that he had already used up 3 of his 4 given lifeline. And as long time fans of the show are aware of. If you use more then 1 lifeline before reason a 4 sum amount. You would not make it far.
This changed when Charles returned to the studio to finish recording his episode. Tecwen “the supposed accomplice” was directly behind him. This was during the time where the show has a “Fastest finger first segment”
Later on, he made it a habit to read the answers out loud. so that his accomplice sitting behind him could answer the questions for him! When he would mention the correct answer, a cough would sound from the audience.
Quiz Production team
During the final rounds of Charles’ questions, the production team began to notice the recurring coughing sounds.
Philip Davies, the studio floor manager, said in court: “There is always coughing during recording, but it’s generally irregular, not systematic.”
When the taping of Charles’ episode had finished, the production team immediately began to review the footage of the episode.
The episode was subsequently pulled from being broadcast, with Celador Productions (the production company behind Who Wants to Be a Millionaire) informing Charles of this, and also that his £1 million prizes were being withdrawn.
The Ingrams and Whittock were arrested later upon suspicion of deception.
